First of all let have a little curiosity fact. The popular term middle east which usually includes parts of
north-Africa, parts of the Mediterranean, and the Arabic peninsula is more cultural slash geo-political term
rather then a reference to a continent which it is not. The current description was first used by the British
Military during world war II. The terms includes: Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon,
Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. I will at first be
focusing mostly on traveling the countries close to the Mediterranean area with focus on historic sites as
well as modern culture and recent popular vacation destinations such as Turkey and Egypt. You might need to
cross reference with the African section of our guide as well as I haven't decided yet whether to move Morocco
to this section of the site.
With the recent developments many has written to us and asked us if it is safe to be traveling in the middle east
at this turbulent times. I should be careful to make statement about that other than my personal view from the
information and reports I have gathered, is that (at time being) it is not more or less safe to travel to many
of this countries than it has been before, but this is what you should do; Pay attention to what happens in the
media and confront your governments statements about the era and their recommendations. My second advice if
you choose to go outside tourist dens areas is that you make yourself a bit familiar with local customs
and that you try not look as much as a "western tourist", if you see what I mean.
I'm in the work of researching for the best literature for globetrotters who wish to visit the middle east and
hope to have the compilation ready shortly. When compiling such a list I try and find the books containing the right
amount of facts and backgrounds as well as the right size to pack in your backpack when you go.
